How To Get A Cruise Line Job

How To Get A Cruise Line Job

by Ryan Puusaari

If you have always dreamed of having a job in the cruise line industry, there are some things that you should know. A career in the cruise line can be the perfect job, but it is not for everyone.
A career on a cruise ship can be beneficial in many different ways. You meet people from all walks of life, and you are able to travel to foreign countries and see exotic beaches that you would never see otherwise. You are able to meet people from all over the world and learn about different cultures and traditions.
There are many different positions aboard a cruise liner. If you are not sure what position is right for you, do some research. Many of the major cruise lines have websites that list positions that are open and also what the position entails.
Apply only for the position that you are qualified for. You do not want to take a position that you know nothing about. Each job has specific requirements. It is important that you choose a position that best fits your abilities.
When you are submitting your application, it is important that you list a specific job that you are applying for. Do not list that you will accept any position available. Cruise line officials do not look favorably upon this. They want to know exactly what you are looking for and what you are qualified for in order to fit you with the best position. You will not be offered a position within the engine room unless you are uniquely qualified to do so.
Do not expect to get the "Cool jobs" right away. Bartenders, pursers, and tour guides are promoted from within or to people who have had previous experience on cruise ships. Once you have proven yourself to be a qualified and dependable employee, you can be promoted. This has held true for many people who have started at the bottom and worked their way up the cruise line ladder. Entry-level positions such as steward or stewardess can be the first step in an adventurous career aboard a cruise liner.
The position that you may be promoted to will fit the skills that you have. The cruise line will make sure of that aspect.
Cruise liners try to maintain uniformity; therefore they will try to hire people of the same nationality. When you are researching positions aboard a cruise liner, it is important that you investigate this aspect.
When you have completed your application packet, make sure that you have filled it out completely and honestly. You will be traveling to places that require you to have a passport and visa. It is important that you are able to obtain these documents to ensure your employment on a cruise liner.
